India to train Vietnamese pilots to fly Sukhoi-30 fighters

India and Vietnam are likely to sign a defence agreement, under which Vietnamese pilots will be trained to operate Russian-built Sukhoi fighters, sources in the Indian Defence Ministry told RIR. The agreement is likely to be signed when Indian President Pranab Mukherjee visits the Southeast Asian country in September.
The details are being finalised during the on-going visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Vietnam, the sources said. Vietnam had earlier asked India to train its defence personnel in using Russia-built Kilo class submarines along with the Su-30 fighters that the country uses.
By 2015, Vietnam will have a fleet of 36 Russian-manufactured Su-30MK2 fighter jets. The Indian Air Force (IAF) operates a fleet of Su-30MKIs, air superiority fighters jointly developed by Sukhoi and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Malaysian pilots have also been trained by the IAF. Last year, India agreed to train 500 Vietnamese submariners to operate Kilo submarines that Vietnam will receive in 2016 from Russia.
India will also consider the sale of the Indo-Russian BrahMos missiles to Vietnam, although a deal is not imminent, the sources added. They said Vietnam is keen to procure these missiles to combat a potential military threat from China. Relations between Hanoi and Beijing have cooled during the last few years because of disputed islands on the South China Sea, which are believed be rich in energy deposits. China claims territorial ownership of the entire sea and its islets and has similar disputes with many of its neighbours.
Indian Defence Ministry sources added that while Vietnam is viewed as one of India’s strongest allies in Southeast Asia, the China factor would be a key in deciding whether to sell BrahMos missiles. “We understand their concerns, but then China is not ready to appreciate our concerns about the threat from Pakistan,” a Defence Ministry official told RIR on the condition of anonymity since he was not authorised to talk to the media. The official denied that Vietnam would be used as a bargaining chip with China, while adding that a few South American countries also approached India for the possible sale of BrahMos missiles.

A tank biathlon is a mechanized military sport invented by the Russian military that has similarities to the sport of biathlon. Tanks have to complete a course of up to 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) avoiding obstacles, crossing rivers and bridges and firing at a set of targets positioned at distances from 900 to 2,200 meters (2,900 to 7,200 feet).

MH17 Brought Down by Air-to-Air Missile, Finished Off by 30-mm Cannon, Experts Allege

The Malaysian Boeing plane that crashed in eastern Ukraine in mid-July, could have been brought down by an air-to-air missile and a cannon of the Su-25 fighter that had been “shadowing it,” The New Straits Times reported on Wednesday citing experts.

Experts believe that MH17 flight was shot down by an air-to-air missile fired from the fighter that later finished it off with a burst of 30mm cannon fire, the newspaper has reported.According to the experts, if this hypothesis is true, it would explain the bullet holes in some sections of MH17’s fuselage.
“Some showed blast patterns consistent with shrapnel from a proximity-fused weapon while some showed the more precise grouping consistent with that of cannon fire. We’re analyzing this,” said one of the sources, adding that a detailed analysis of the pieces of the jetliner is needed to corroborate this emerging theory.
Under this new version, the heat-seeker would have aimed at the hottest part of the aircraft’s engines. These claims rule out the previous version that the aircraft had been downed by the BUK missile system (NATO SA-11 ‘Gadfly’).
“A BUK-M1, with its 70 kg head, would have been enough bring down the airliner without the need to go in for a guns kill,” the sources said.
The Sukhoi Su-25 close-air support aircraft (NATO Frogfoot) has a maximum service ceiling of about 25,000 feet (7,620 meters). It has an internally mounted 30mm cannon for anti-armor work, the report said.“The Su-25 would have been operating at the extreme corner of its performance envelope but it’s entirely possible,” the sources added.
Five days after the deadly crash, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the “shadowing” the MH17 was a Russian-manufactured Sukhoi Su-25 close-air support aircraft operated by the Ukrainian Air Force. The presence of the Ukrainian combat jet can be confirmed by video shots made by the Rostov monitoring center, said Lt. Gen. Andrei Kartapolov, the head of the Main Operations Directorate of the HQ of Russia’s military forces.
The ministry’ s analysis of MH17 showed that the Russian air traffic control system picked up a deviation in the flight path of 14 kilometers north from the fixed corridor, well inside Ukrainian airspace, while following its assigned flight level of 33,000 feet.
This deviation in the flight path could have been performed only under the instruction of Ukraine’s air traffic controllers. Russian radar nets also picked up “activity” by the Ukrainian Air Force in the area at the time MH17 was airborne.
The air-to-ground transmission tapes between MH17 and Ukrainian air traffic controllers were seized by the Ukrainian Security Service on the day of the shootdown and have not been made available to investigators.
Media reports said earlier that the information provided by the black boxes from the Boeing plane, which have not been so far unveiled to public, said that the aircraft was damaged by multiple fragments of a missile.

Captured BSF Jawan to be Returned by Pakistan Tomorrow

A jawan with the Border Security Force (BSF) in Jammu who was captured and arrested by Pakistani troops for allegedly straying across the border will be returned tomorrow, said the Press Trust of India citing unnamed sources.

“Yes, we have arrested an Indian border security official. He is currently under investigation and being treated very well,” said Tasnim Aslam, a spokeswoman for the Foreign Office in Islamabad. “A contact between the militaries of two countries was made yesterday and another contact is expected soon.
If he is not linked with any matter harming our security, and appears clear in the investigation, he may be released after complete investigation of the matter,” she added.
The trooper, identified as Satyasheel Yadav, was part of a team patrolling the River Chenab on Wednesday when the engine of the motorboat failed.
While attempting to climb into a rescue boat, the jawan fell into the river and was pushed by strong currents onto the Pakistani side where he was taken into custody.

49 Army personnel killed in counter-insurgency operations in J&K

Forty-nine Indian Army personnel were killed in counter-insurgency and counter-infiltration operations in Jammu and Kashmir in the last three years, Rajya Sabha was informed today.

In a written reply to a query in the Upper House, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said 49 Army personnel were martyred in Jammu and Kashmir during operations in the last three years.
The Minister said the force has evolved a counter-infiltration strategy which is executed in synergy with the state government.
Meanwhile, answering another query, Jaitley said the government has spent Rs 4.95 lakh crore to procure equipment for the Army in the last ten years.
The figures provided by the Minister suggest that the highest amount to be spent on procurements would be in 2014-15 as the Government has allocated Rs 75,148.03 crore for this purpose.
To a query on exercises with friendly foreign countries, Jaitley said in last three years, India has conducted 76 war games with nations including Russia, America, China, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Oman, Singapore and Seychelles.

Lionsgate Granted Restraining Order Over 'Expendables 3' Leak

A California judge orders six torrent sites to stop distributing the Sylvester Stallone film.

Lionsgate can't put the genie back in the bottle, but the film company has won a temporary restraining order against the anonymous operators of various torrent sites accused of circulating The Expendables 3.

The lawsuit was filed late last week against "John Does 1-10." Lionsgate reported in its lawsuit that on July 24 a digital file containing a high-quality reproduction of the film had been stolen and uploaded to the Internet. In a follow-up motion, Lionsgate told the judge that Expendables 3 had already been downloaded 2.1 million times, including approximately 247,000 times in the United States.
To counter the Expendables 3 leak in advance of of a Aug. 15 release for the film, Lionsgate's outside vendor MarkMonitor has sent about 2,770 take-down requests covering 10,846 unique host URLs.
But Lionsgate said it wasn't enough. The film studio told the judge that it wasn't merely concerned about the amount of potential revenue lost at the box office, but also its relationship with theatrical exhibitors.
"Lions Gate has established that it will suffer irreparable harm in the absence of immediate relief," responded U.S. District Judge Margaret Morrow in an order issued late Monday. "Among other things, Defendants’ likely infringement has stripped Lions Gate of the critical right of first publication, is interfering with Lions Gate’s contractual relationships with third parties, is damaging Lions Gate’s goodwill among consumers, and is depriving Lions Gate of revenue that will be difficult or impossible to calculate, but is likely far in excess of any amount that Defendants could repay to Lions Gate in damages even if the amount could be calculated."
The restraining order targets the officers behind limetorrents.com, billionuploads.com,hulfile.eu, played.to, swankshare.com and dotsemper.com — entities that are said to have ignored demands to remove The Expendables 3. These sites are enjoined from hosting or linking to the film, taking any action that contributes to the infringement of the film, and transferring the registration of their sites. The temporary restraining order is valid until August 8, although it's up to the defendants to show cause why the terms of the TRO shouldn't be entered as a preliminary injunction. The judge has also given Lionsgate the ability to contact the banks, payment processors and advertising service providers of the sites to basically freeze accounts.
Although the bulk of the downloads appear to have occurred outside the United States, Lionsgate was able to convince the judge on jurisdiction by, among other things, pointing to evidence that a good deal of the U.S. Expendables 3 piracy — 8.5 percent — happened in Los Angeles.

Top 5 must see Places In Leh

1. Pangong Tso

Situated at height of around 4,350 meters above sea level, and extends from India to Tibet. Pangong Lake is at a distance of approximately 150 kms from the town of Leh, however travelling that distance is totally worth the effort as you’ll be mesmerised by the jaw dropping site for sure. The drive from Leh is rough and dramatic; you will find many other attractions on your way about which I will explain later in this post. As 60% of the lake lies in Tibet, tourists have to obtain special permits to visit the lake. While Indian nationals can obtain individual permits, others have to get group permits along with the company of an accredited tour guide.

2. Shanti Stupa

It is a Buddhist white domed stupa in Leh district, Shanti Stupa was built by a Japanese Buddhist monk Gyomyo Nakamura and was enshrined by the 14th Dalai Lama himself. The stupa holds the relics of the Buddha at its base, and provides a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape which is the best during dawn and dusk. The stupa is considered to be a major tourist attraction in Leh; it is located at an altitude of 4,267 meters above sea level and is at a short distance of 5 kilometres by road. One can alternatively reach the stupa by climbing 500 steps from the city of Leh.
3. Leh Palace

Built in 1553 AD, the 19 stories high Leh Palace was built on a hilltop and still looks imposing from the town; apparently it was one of the tallest buildings in the world during that time. It was the residence of the royal family till the mid 19th century when the dogra forces attacked laddakh and the royal family moved to the Stok palace thus abandoning the fort. Although in ruins now, the palace is now being restored by the Archaeological survey of India. The palace also has a museum which holds a rich collection of jewellery, ornaments, ceremonial dresses and crowns. The paintings in the museum are more than 450 years old Chinese thangka paintings.

4. Khardung La

Khardung La or Khardung Pass is situated 40 kilometres from Leh, and is considered the highest motor able pass in the world (disputed by many modern measurements). Laying at an altitude of 5,602 meters above sea level the pass was built in 1976 and opened to motor vehicles in 1988. The pass is also used to carry military supplies to the notoriously famous Siachen glacier and has been a constant challenge destination for adventurers and bikers all around the world. The foreign tourists need to obtain a special permit to visit this spot.

5. Nubra Valley

Located close to the borders of Pakistan and China, Nubra Valley is one of India’s best kept secrets. It is a feast for eyes and offers tranquility. As one approaches the monastery of Disket, on the way to the village of Hundar in Ladakh, the Nubra valley and the River creates surrealistic patterns on the terrain. The floor of this wind swept valley, skirted by lofty heights of the Karakoram ranges is marked by sand dunes, interspersed by thorny bushes. Often one can sight herds of double-humped Bactrian camels foraging.

'Halo 5: Guardians' and Spielberg Halo TV Show Coming in 2015

With Xbox One sales flagging behind the PlayStation 4, the cybernetic super-soldier from Microsoft's most popular video game series ever could swoop in and save the day.

Yes, Master Chief is coming back. On Friday, Microsoft announced that "Halo 5: Guardians" will be released in the fall of 2015. It's getting a little help from Hollywood, thanks to a new “Halo” television series that will premiere around the same time on Showtime and Xbox Live.

“Halo 5: Guardians is a bigger effort than Halo 4,” Bonnie Ross, general manager of 343 Industries, wrote in a blog post. “Certainly there are some core elements carried over from prior games, but we’ve invested a huge effort in retooling our tech to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen.”
Master Chief, the game's main protagonist, will certainly look smooth at 60 frames per second. Other th details about the game are scarce, but Microsoft could use a hit. Despite the success of another first-person shooter, "Titanfall," the Xbox One has continually lagged behind the PlayStation 4 in sales.
Microsoft is also trying to entice customers by offering a Kinect-less version of the Xbox One for $400, which is $100 cheaper than the original package.
"Halo 5" will have plenty of Hollywood hype behind it. The new "Halo" TV show will be released as an Xbox Original, part of a slate of new dramas, comedies, documentaries and more meant for Xbox Live.
The show's producer? Some guy named Steven Spielberg, who directed a few films you may have heard of, including "Jurassic Park" and the "Indiana Jones" movies. Considering the sad history of TV shows based on video games (yes, we're talking about the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show"), it's likely this could be the first video game adaptation worth watching.

Power Hungry: Game Consoles May Cost $1 Billion in Electricity Yearly

The latest generation of home gaming consoles uses so much power that the consoles may end up costing American consumers $1 billion dollars in electricity a year, according to a new report by a New York environmental group. Forty percent of that power — a whopping $400 million a year — may be consumed by consoles not being actively used, but instead left in standby mode.
The Natural Resources Defense Council said Microsoft's Xbox One is the biggest energy consumer of the three major current-generation consoles, followed by Sony's PlayStation 4 and Nintendo's Wii U.
The Xbox One's dubious distinction is a result of its always-on standby mode, which is constantly listening for gamers' voice commands. The PlayStation 4 ranks second, the group says, due to its inefficient controller charging. (Both consoles are designed to be on all the time, but can be powered off.) Of the three major consoles, the Wii U was considered the most power-efficient.
Interestingly, the NRDC said in its report that the current-generation consoles use more power in standby mode and when playing movies than they do when playing games over the course of a year. That's because the overall amount of time spent in standby mode is much more than the time spent playing games.
What's more, the group says the game consoles use 30 to 45 times more power when playing videos than do dedicated streaming media devices such as Apple TV and Google Chromecast. It adds that the Xbox One and PS4 consume two to three times as much power than the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Game consoles have long been known to be power hogs, but the latest generation's reliance on standby features has resulted in a nearly three-fold increase in power consumption. Although the NRDC is asking console manufacturers to take steps to reduce their devices' power-sucking ways, the best solution may be to just unplug your gaming system when you're not using it. But make sure you've fully powered it off first.

Finish Him! New Mortal Kombat Trailer Hits Internet

It looks the bone-cracking violence that made Mortal Kombat a hit in the 1990s is making a comeback, this time with Mortal Kombat X for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
The trailer released on Monday does not reveal much about game, except that it's going to be really, really gruesome. (Warning: The trailer involves someone's head getting ripped off of his body). Also, instead of the cheesy Mortal Kombat theme songwe all know and love, this preview features a new track from Wiz Khalifa.

So, what else do we know about Mortal Kombat X? Well, um, both Scorpion and Sub-Zero will be major characters. It's coming out sometime in 2015, and will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC as well.
The last game to be released in the series was the unfortunately named Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition in 2012.

Game On! College Lures Students With 'League of Legends' Scholarships

In the fall, a crop of young student-athletes will walk into Robert Morris University in Illinois with the first scholarships ever awarded in the United States for playing a video game.
"League of Legends," from Los Angeles-based Riot Games, is the most popular PC game in the world. Every day, around 27 million people sign on to battle each other infive-on-five fantasy brawls. Last fall, 10,000 people packed into the Staples Center in Los Angeles to watch the World Championship Final, where the winning team took home $1 million. In South Korea, pro players are treated like rock stars, with sponsorship deals and adoring fans.

Sign up for top Technology news delivered direct to your inbox
Drew Dicksen, a senior at Robert Morris, hopes to make the varsity team next year when the university’s athletic department becomes the first in the country to recognize "League of Legends" as an official sport.

“At first, when I saw the announcement, I thought it was a joke,” Dicksen, a senior with one more year of school, told NBC News. Dicksen is no computer nerd. At 6 feet, 6 inches, he is a member of the school's volleyball team. He started playing "League of Legends" three years ago.
Now, he talks about dramatic moments in pro "League of Legends" matches with the same enthusiasm as a "cheesehead" might talk about an Aaron Rodgers touchdown pass.

"A football team might throw a Hail Mary, just like a 'League of Legends' team might get 'aced,'" he said, referring to when one team kills every single player on the other team.
Making the team won’t be easy. The Robert Morris coach, who has yet to be named, will have to winnow down the prospects to five starters and four others for the varsity team, and enough players for two or three support teams.
“There has been massive interest in it so far,” Kurt Melcher, associate athletic director at Robert Morris, told NBC News. In the one day after announcing the scholarships, he said received more than 500 emails from players interested in joining.
Next year, he will have 50 scholarships to give out, each one for about $19,000 in tuition and room and board. And while the NCAA does not recognize eSports, the team will follow “strict rules for behavior" just like any other sports team, Melcher said.
That scholarship money could help attract top players (and future tech-world talent) away from other schools. There are 103 teams that play in the Collegiate StarLeague, most of them classified as social clubs.

“I thought, we give out scholarships for other unique sports, like bowling,” Melcher said. “Why wouldn’t we give scholarships to athletes who play eSports?”

Yeah, you probably won’t see "League of Legends" highlights on ESPN's "SportsCenter" anytime soon, and nobody would confuse the team’s retrofitted computer lab for Midwestern sports shrines like Notre Dame Stadium or the University of Michigan’s “Big House.”
Still, this will very much be an official school sport, with daily practices, team meetings and maybe even spectators. The best eSports players don't need to be able to run a fast 40-year dash, but they do need quick reflexes, which is why not many professional "League of Legends" players last past their late 20s.
Both Melcher and Dicksen expect to see a lot of young, dedicated players try out for the team. If anything, they might be too dedicated.
“We might have to limit the amount of time that they practice," Melcher said, "so they don’t end up with too much Red Bull in their system.”

'Beak Impact': Angry Birds and NASA Team Up Again for New Game

Angry Birds and NASA have teamed up for the second time to develop a new version of the popular game. The new iteration of the Angry Birds franchise sends players to the space agency's next cosmic target — asteroids.

In 2012, game developer Rovio Entertainment collaborated with NASA to create and release the mobile app Angry Birds Space, which allowed them to teach people about physics and space exploration through a highly successful and addictive puzzle game. The new edition, called "Beak Impact," was released earlier this month for iOS and Android devices.
"The collaboration with Rovio and Angry Birds Space is an extraordinary opportunity to reach millions of gamers and use the fictional universe to point players to real information about asteroids, why NASA studies them and how they fit into our exploration path to Mars," David Weaver, associate administrator for the Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters, said in a statement.

NASA is currently planning a manned mission to Mars, which is slated to launch by the mid-2030s. To pave the way for this ambitious goal, the space agency is looking to use a robotic spacecraft to capture a relatively small asteroid or a piece of a larger space rock and place it into orbit around the moon. This undertaking would allow astronauts to visit and explore the captured asteroid by 2025, and the skills and technology necessary to get astronauts to and from the asteroid will help inform NASA's mission to the Red Planet.

(As part of NASA's Asteroid Initiative, the agency is also working to detect, track and characterize potentially hazardous asteroids that could harm Earth).
Beak Impact contains 40 new asteroid-based levels for Angry Birds Space that include numerous NASA tie-ins. Hidden within the levels are NASA spacecraft, including the Orion capsule, OSIRIS-REx, Deep Impact and Dawn spacecraft, each of which links players back to NASA information that describes the probes and their related missions.

"It is a great opportunity to educate, inform, and even inspire players about space exploration, all while playing one of the most popular interactive games ever created," Weaver said.

10 Exciting Video Games to Look Out for in 2014

The worst part about E3 is the waiting.
After ingesting a flood of information for hundreds of titles and watching their excitement levels rise to critical peaks, players now must sit back and be patient. Some of the games won't be out for months. Others could take years.
we've compiled a list of the games most likely to perform well when they hit stores. Here's what turned our head at this year's E3.
'Destiny'
Made by the creators of "Halo," "Destiny" looks to be one of this year's sure bets.
Set 700 years in the future, the sci-fi action game, which has already received a 10-year commitment from publisher Activision, is absolutely breathtaking, with a focus on co-operative play.
That focus, though, doesn't eliminate the single player story progression. Developer Bungie blends the two wonderfully into a dynamic world where players save the day—and the human race. (Due out Sept. 9, 2014)
'Batman: Arkham Knight'
The Arkham series of Batman games have been among the best super-hero games to hit consoles, so hopes are high for this concluding chapter. And from what was on display at E3, fans should be happy.
The game, set one year after 2011's "Batman: Arkham City" pits Bruce Wayne's alter ego against the Scarecrow, who has brought together the Caped Crusader's enemies to permanently put an end to Batman's reign.
You'll swing around the city and stealthily prowl rooftops as you have in previous games, but this time, you can also summon the Batmobile. (Due out 2015)
'Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare'
"Call of Duty" has never been a particularly light-hearted series, but Advanced Warfare could be the darkest installment yet.
Set in 2054, the game focuses on private military corporations who fight for the highest bidder. Kevin Spacey plays the CEO of the chief contractor—and he sure oozes evil in the snippets we've seen.

Add in exoskeletons, hoverbikes, mechs and cloaking technology and this could silence "Call of Duty" naysayers for a while. (Due out Nov. 4, 2014)
'Amiibo'
It's one of those ideas that just makes sense.
Take Nintendo's sizable lineup of characters and follow the same real toy/virtual toy model that has made Activision billions of dollars.

"Amiibo" gives Mario the Skylanders treatment, letting players raise and train characters in game—and giving kids and collectors something to hold onto in the real world. (Due out holiday 2014 )
'Evolve'
Developer Turtle Rock Studios showed with the "Left 4 Dead" series that it knew how to make multiplayer games that appealed to everyone, even people who don't like multiplayer games.
"Evolve" is the next step. Teams of four hunters seek to take down a monster, controlled by other players.

It's the hybrid of a shooter, sci-fi game and hide and seek. It's one of the more unique titles of the year—and if it can stand out in a crowded month, it could become one of the go-to franchises of this generation. (Due out Oct. 21, 2014)
'No Man’s Sky'
The standout game from Sony's E3 press conference wasn't a big franchise—or even the long--awaited debut of a next generation "Uncharted."
It was a stunning trailer that mixed open world space flight with beautiful worlds, some inhabited with dinosaurs.

Developed by a small four-man team, "No Man's Sky" is a huge game, where every player starts on a unique world, eventually exploring the universe. It's insanely ambitious, but it was a welcome break from the space marines and shooters that were so prominent. (Due out TBD)
'Assassin’s Creed: Unity'
It might be an annual franchise, but this year's "Assassin's Creed" seems in some ways like a new beginning.
Set in the French Revolution, this year's installment features cooperative multiplayer gaming, letting you storm the Bastille among other things with three of your friends.
The graphics are stunning, recreating Paris to the smallest detail — and the action doesn't stray too far from what fans love. It's an iteration, but a significant one. (Due out Oct. 28)
'Halo: The Master Chief Collection'
"Halo" is the reason Microsoft's Xbox succeeded—and with Halo 5 not coming out until next year, Microsoft is counting on nostalgia to keep fans satiated.
"The Master Chief Collection" includes Halo: Combat Evolved (the 2002 orig
inal game), Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4—as well as a digital series overseen by Ridley Scott that will set the stage for next year's fifth installment in the saga of the Master Chief.(Due out Nov. 11)
'Grim Fandango'
How does a 1998 game make it onto a 2014 must-have list? When it's developer Tim Schafer's critically adored game set on the Mexican Day of the Dead, that's when.
This remastered version of the cult hit is something fans have been asking — no, begging — for for years.
Genuinely funny characters, a wonderful story and a soundtrack that combines big band, jazz and multiple international music styles make this a gaming classic that's still relevant today (Due out TBD)
'Oculus Rift/Project Morpheus'
Virtual reality is getting more and more promising—and both Sony and Oculus had plenty to show this year.
While there's still no date on either VR headset, gamers waited for hours to try them—and came out smiling. Whether your preferred platform is the PC (Oculus' focus) or the PS4 (Sony's, naturally), there seems to be a bright future ahead for the virtual world. (Due out TBD)

PlayStation Side Effect: Dangerous Blood Clots, Docs Say

A New Zealand man who played eight hours of video games for four days in a row developed life-threatening blood clots so severe that doctors created a new condition: “gamer’s thrombosis.” The situation involving the 31-year-old PlayStation fan was picked as the case report of the year for 2013 by BioMed Central, a U.K. publisher of science news.
Doctors at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland reported that the young man sat on his bed for four days with his legs outstretched playing PlayStation games. On the second day, he developed pain and swelling in his left leg, but ignored it for two more days. By then, he had developed deep vein thrombosis, blood clots that can potentially break free, blocking circulation and causing death. It took several clot-busting drugs to save him. Other gamers should take heed, doctors say, and get up at least every few hours.

Mirage 2000 Fighter crashes in southeast France

AN AIR Force Mirage jet crashed in hills near Viens, southeast France, this morning.
Authorities confirmed that the pilot and co-pilot ejected and parachuted to the ground safely as the two-seater Mirage 2000B aircraft went down in an uninhabited area on the borders of the Vaucluse and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments.
The two crew members, from the Orange base, were on a routine training mission and have been taken to Oppedette, officials said. The cause of the crash has not yet been ascertained.
There have been no reports that anyone has been injured.
It is the second time a Mirage jet has crashed during a training exercise in a few months.
In May, a single-seater Mirage 2000-5F crashed in a field near houses in a tiny village about 100km north of Nancy. The pilot also managed to eject safely. – See more at: http://connexionfrance.com/france-air-fighter-mirage-viens-vaucluse-alpes-de-haute-provence-crash-pilots-eject-hills-16057-view-article.html#sthash.Tb6AsrI9.dpuf

Sony: Project Morpheus virtual reality headset is a significant investment

The virtual reality technology Project Morpheus is "the new frontier of game development" and represents a significant investment by the company, Sony's games chief has said.
Speaking to the Guardian, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House, said, "It's definitely more than an experiment. We've made some commitments; we're putting significant investment into the product."

Revealed at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco in June, Project Morpheus is a virtual reality (VR) headset which puts two high definition screens in front of the wearer's eyes, providing an immersive 3D view of the game world.
The device also includes movement tracking technologies, so players can move their head to look around the virtual scene. The product will work in conjunction with Sony's PlayStation 4 console, but no release date has been announced.
Although the concept has been around for several decades, virtual reality is only now emerging as a realistic mainstream consumer technology. Headsets launched in the early nineties featured low-resolution screens and significant lag between player movements and on-screen action causing motion sickness.

In 2012, however, a start-up tech company named Oculus successfully crowd-funded a new VR headset on the Kickstarter site and has since sold over 100,000 early versions of its Oculus Rift device to developers. A consumer launch is expected next autumn.

For Sony, virtual reality represents a new way to boost consumer electronics sales. 3D TV has largely proved a failure, as many consumers were unimpressed with stereoscopic 3D effects in the living room. But virtual reality potentially provides a much more complete experience.
"We do now think that we can get to this point of delivering a magical sense of presence - where your brain tricks you into thinking you're actually in this place," said House. "We think there's something there that could be really, really interesting for a next frontier of game development."

"Developers are passionate about VR"

Another important element for Sony is engaging with the game development community. The company's PlayStation 4 console is in burgeoning competition with Microsoft's Xbox One, and both want to attract the most talented game makers to their machines. The huge popularity of Oculus Rift among games coders and designers has encouraged Sony to think that Project Morpheus is a good way of securing talent.
"With Oculus we saw this groundswell of game development that didn't necessarily have a monetisable or a business option, but [developers were] so passionate about this space that they were doing this essentially in their spare time," said House. "It struck that me that if there's a variety of game developersshowing interest in this space then it's probably time to jump in and see if we can play a part and give them the tools they're looking for."
The big question is whether mainstream users will be willing to sit in their living rooms wearing virtual reality headsets. There has been much enthusiasm within the games community, but technologies like this have been largely untested among the wider consumer base. It may be that sales of the Google Glass device, which offers augmented reality technology, provides a useful analogue.

Asked about the mass market potential of the device, House replied, "I don't know, but I think that at the very least it's going to be another really interesting advance for the PS4 ecosystem and another way to deliver brand new experiences. That's what we're all about."

Nepal landslide: India sends its C-130J Super Hercules to transport geologists

The Indian Air Force deployed its C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft to transport a team of geologists and
disaster management officials to Nepal for clearing the landslide in a river there which is threatening to cause flood in
Bihar.A C-130J Super Hercules aircraft carried out a night landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu
on Saturday and dropped a team of Geological Survey of India, Central Water Commission and the National Disaster
Response Force (NDRF) there to assist the Nepalese Army in clearing the landslide in a calibrated manner, IAF
officials said.

The aircraft was launched at a short notice on the instructions issued by the Cabinet Secretariat to provide help to Nepal
in handling the flood situation, they said. The Special Operations aircraft used its high-end technology equipment to carry out the landing in the tricky airport, where flights do not operate after dark, they said.
The aircraft returned to India at 0330 hours on Sunday after accomplishing its assigned task, the officials said.
Meanwhile, the IAF has deployed a C-17 heavy-lift aircraft with a team of 20 doctors and a mobile hospital in Purnea
to handle the flood situation.
The force has kept 14 aircraft on stand by mode to participate in relief operations, if required.”One Ilyushin-76 transport aircraft in Chandigarh, two An-32s in Agra along with two Mi-17V5 helicopters in Gorakhpur have been kept on stand by. Four Mi-17V5s have been moved from Baghdogra in West Bengal to Purnea in Bihar for relief operations,” the officials said.
A landslide in Nepal in Bhate Kosi river — a tributary of Kosi river in Bihar, has threatened to cause floods in the state
and efforts are being made to clear the blockage in the river.

Guardians of the Skies: Second Phase of Popular Combat Game to Hit Android Stores on IAF Day

Over the years, the Indian Armed Forces have promoted many campaigns and heavily depended on them to instil pride for motherland among the youth, to promote them to join the Army, Navy and Air Force and to increase awareness about how much their motherland needs them. These campaigns generally always work during recruitment, invoking grand patriotism in them, and promise glory and adventure.
Recently, the Indian Air Force (IAF) employed a novel – at least in India – recruitment strategy by launching mobile game Guardians of the Skies, in an attempt to induce intense patriotism in the youngsters, compelling them to sign up for the IAF.
Launching the 3D mobile game Guardians of the Skies (GOTS), Air Marshal S Sukumar hailed the event as a significant milestone in encouraging youth to join IAF and also expressed concerns over tapping the best of human resources from upcoming generations.
“We are getting the numbers, but we want to attract the best of the boys and the girls to join the Air Force,” Sukumar told Digit.
“The best message actually goes through if we can make people go through the act of playing the game as a fighter pilot,” said Sameer Joshi, former fighter pilot and the creative director of Threye, “a young playful” Delhi-based start-up which created the game.
While your enemies in “GOTS” are the fictional Zazurians of a neighbouring country, the players are privy to the life of an Air Force officer during combat with a briefing before every mission, war-like situations, and search and rescue missions.
Couple it with top-notch graphics, thumping music and aircraft such as Sukhoi 30 and MiG 29, which are real jets flown by the Air Force, you will feel like an actual officer by the time you put the mobile/tablet down. You will even achieve campaign ribbons and gallantry awards as you progresses across various missions.
On 4 June, YouTube channel “Guardians- Indian Air Force” had posted the teaser for the game, which consists of a training mission and two operational missions, under the title, “‘Guardians of the Skies’ – IAF Mobile Game Teaser”, which found over 64,535 views.”‘Guardians’… breaks the cliché by bringing the first Campaign based air combat game play on the mobile platform. It also sets new benchmark in graphic and game play optimization techniques and has the most elaborate collection of flying missions ever seen on a mobile platform,” reads the Windows Phone description of the game.
As hoped by the IAF, the game has evoked many positive responses among the youth
